Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was a German composer and pianist, widely considered one of the greatest and most influential figures in Western classical music. Born in Bonn, he showed prodigious musical talent from a young age and moved to Vienna to study under composers like Joseph Haydn.

Beethoven's career is typically divided into three periods:

  • Early period – Influenced by Mozart and Haydn, he composed elegant and structured works.
  • Middle period ("Heroic") – Marked by bold, emotional, and innovative compositions, including Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), Symphony No. 5, and Piano Concerto No. 5.
  • Late period – More introspective and complex, with masterpieces like the Ninth Symphony (which includes the "Ode to Joy") and his late string quartets.
  • A defining aspect of his life was his progressive hearing loss, which began in his late 20s and led to near-total deafness. Despite this, he continued to compose groundbreaking music, pushing the boundaries of form and expression.

Beethoven's legacy endures as a symbol of artistic genius, resilience, and the transformative power of music.
