Leonardo DiCaprio is an American actor and film producer known for his work in biographical and period films. His career began in the late 1980s, with early roles in television before his film debut in 1991. He received critical acclaim for his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and achieved international stardom with Titanic (1997). DiCaprio sought roles in other genres to shed his romantic hero image, including Catch Me If You Can (2002) and Gangs of New York (2002). He founded Appian Way Productions in 2004. He is also an active environmentalist and was designated a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2014.
