Why would anyone try to kill a healer?

It has been thirty years since the first colonists came to the north. Mostly refugees fleeing the Queen Wars, they banded together for protection in walled communities as they fought to carve out a living in a harsh land filled with unfriendly indigenous tribes and northern barbarians.

Brae's Creek is one such village and Deenah is its apprentice healer. One day, her quiet life is shattered when a stranger gravely wounds her master and flees into the wilds. For all her skills, Deenah is unable to identify the strange, magical forces at work on the injury.

To save her master's life, Deenah must join Kaern, the youngest warder the north has ever known, and his elderly companion, a veteran tracker of the Queen Wars.

Together, they set out into dark, hostile lands on a manhunt that is not all that it seems.
