"Le Papillon and the Candle" is an award-winning musical composition, recognized as one of the winners of the "Fables of Leonardo da Vinci in Music" competition, organized by the
Carano4Children foundation and judged by Stefano Cucci on behalf of Maestro Ennio Morricone. This work is a vivid musical interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's fable The Butterfly and the Candle, written in both English and French, with the two characters expressing themselves in different languages. Eclectic in style, the piece blends simple, lyrical melodies sung by children with virtuosic accompaniment and demanding solo passages. This composition exists in four distinct versions: one for soprano, baritone, and piano; another adding a children's choir; a third incorporating a string quartet alongside the choir, soloists, and piano; and a purely instrumental version for string quartet. Optional staging ideas enhance the theatrical nature of the performance. For instance, the soprano could light a candle during the opening piano bars and hold it throughout the performance, while the baritone blows out the candle at the conclusion. Countless other staging possibilities exist, and performers are strongly encouraged to explore these to bring additional dramatic depth to the piece.
