Our mother abandoned us at an early age because my sister raised demons and I could speak with the dead. She was an angel whisperer, and felt she was above that. We survived. We created lives for ourselves. We did well.

The day she arrives back in our lives, a demigod pulls me away to watch my sister break a promise she'd made to me; that she'd stop raising demons. She's trying to solve a case, to track down the killer who's using human sacrifices to pierce the veil and raise demons under his control.

Except there are no demons. She's being distracted so something worse can happen.
