佛告訴我們,懺悔要去除切斷憎、愛、嫉妒、諂曲這些心理,把內心洗刷乾淨,這才是懺悔。並不是跑到佛堂哭一場,就是懺悔了。哭是情緒的發洩,哭過以後,心很平靜,那是哭累了,別的事情想不起來了。你不要以為在佛(或上帝)前一跪,一哭,懺悔之後,覺得好安祥啊!得到上帝的靈感啊!得到菩薩的加被啊!其實那是累啦,不是佛菩薩的感應。不信再過幾個鐘頭,吃飽了,體力足了,他的脾氣又來啦!注意,什麼是真懺悔要搞清楚。懺悔之後,內心洗刷乾淨之後,再來修止、修觀、修禪那。《圓覺經》裏說:"求勝上心,三種淨觀。"但是,我們一般人卻相反,不求懺悔,就想休止、修觀、修禪那,結果越修越亂,止也止不了,靜也靜不下。先求懺悔,內心純善,到了善的境界,中國人講"為善最樂",心理產生喜悅,生理發起輕妄,再來求定,那就容易了。
