Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885) was a Union general, Civil War hero, and the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877). Rising to prominence during the Civil War, he led the Union Army to key victories, including the capture of Vicksburg and the defeat of Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee, securing his reputation as a determined and strategic military leader. As president, Grant worked to reunify the country during Reconstruction, advocating for civil rights and taking action against the Ku Klux Klan. However, his administration was marred by corruption scandals, despite his personal integrity. After leaving office, Grant faced financial ruin but regained public admiration with the publication of his Personal Memoirs, which became a literary and financial success. His leadership in war and his efforts to protect the rights of freed slaves have solidified his legacy as a key figure in American history.
