Harry S. Truman (1884–1972) was the 33rd President of the United States (1945–1953), taking office after the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the final months of World War II. He made one of history's most controversial decisions by authorizing the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which led to Japan's surrender. Truman also played a key role in shaping the postwar world, implementing the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, leading the U.S. into the Cold War with the Truman Doctrine to contain communism, and overseeing the formation of NATO. Domestically, he pushed for civil rights and desegregation of the military, despite strong opposition. Though initially unpopular when he left office, his legacy has since been reassessed as one of decisive leadership during a transformative period in American history.
