Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794–1877) was an American business magnate and philanthropist who played a key role in shaping the transportation industry in the 19th century. Starting with a small ferry business, he expanded into steamships and later dominated the railroad industry, amassing one of the largest fortunes of his time. Known as "The Commodore," Vanderbilt was instrumental in consolidating railroad networks, notably forming the New York Central Railroad, which streamlined travel and commerce across the northeastern United States. Despite his ruthless business tactics, he left a lasting legacy, including significant contributions to higher education, such as funding Vanderbilt University.
