Maya is lying in her room, writing something in a diary. Manik quietly approaches the window and peeks through a crack, observing her. He is shocked and thinks to himself—
Did my wife mix poison with the food? Then why isn't the girl dead yet? I've been checking on her repeatedly, and nothing's happening to her. Could it be that my wife is betraying me, lying to me?
He quickly exits.
Inside the room, Shefali is sitting. Manik storms in, grabs her by the throat, and speaks with fury.
"Tell me the truth! Did you mix poison with the girl's food? If you did, why isn't she dead yet?"
Shefali starts crying. "I tried many times, but I couldn't mix poison into the girl's food."
"I'll kill you today! Come with me!" Manik grabs Shefali's hand and drags her outside. He slaps her hard across the face.
"You're my wife! How could you betray me like this?"
"Kill me, kill me! How could I kill the girl who took refuge in me?"
"You're driving me crazy! I have murder in my mind now. You're coming with me—"
"Where are we going?"
"I'll smother the girl with a pillow and hold her down while you sit on her body so she can't move. Tonight, I'll end her life and take all her money. I'll be rich."
"No, no! Don't do such a sinful thing!" Shefali cries.
"I won't listen to you. Come with me!"
He drags her away.
Maya is sleeping, with her diary lying beside her. Manik enters with a pillow, followed by Shefali. He quietly moves toward Maya, smothering her with the pillow while Shefali sits on her body to hold her still. After a few moments, Maya stops moving. Manik removes the pillow and opens a briefcase, looking at the money inside. He finds an old photograph from his childhood—himself with his sister. The realization hits him like a thunderbolt.
"This is my childhood photo! That's my sister Maya. She went missing at the Badamtali Fair when we were young... Could this be my lost sister Maya?"
Shefali is shocked. "What are you saying?"
"Yes, yes, it's true."
Manik continues flipping through the diary, and Maya's voice is heard—
"Brother, I am your beloved little sister Maya. I got lost at the Badamtali Fair when I was a child. Actually, I wasn't lost; I was kidnapped. When I grew up, that person forced me into a brothel. I have no shame in saying that I no longer recognize myself as your little sister. I leave this briefcase with money for you. Take it, and live the rest of your life with it. Before sunrise, I will leave. If possible, forgive me.
Maya."
