John D. Rockefeller (1839–1937) was an American business magnate and philanthropist, best known as the founder of Standard Oil, which revolutionized the petroleum industry and made him one of the wealthiest individuals in history. Through aggressive business tactics, vertical integration, and innovation in refining and distribution, Rockefeller built an oil empire that dominated the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His success led to the creation of antitrust laws after Standard Oil was broken up in 1911. Despite his ruthless business reputation, he became one of the greatest philanthropists of all time, donating vast sums to education, medicine, and scientific research, including the founding of the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Foundation. His legacy remains a complex blend of industrial dominance and charitable impact.
