Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937) was a Czechoslovak statesman, progressive political activist and philosopher who served as the first President of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935. He is regarded as the founding father of Czechoslovakia.
The Masaryk's article Russia from Theocracy to Democracy, which we propose to our readers today, was published in 1917 in The New Europe (volume II, no. 23). It is an erudite analysis of the political situation in Russia in 1917, a time of great tension, hope and transformation which, when Masaryk was writing, had not yet resulted in the bloody seizure of power by the Bolsheviks.
