It is the first century, and the Romans seek total control of Britain. Jodocca, British tribal warrior and champion, meets Roman officer Marcus Gaius on a trading trip. She is attracted to him although he is the invading enemy. He falls heavily for her but this is a relationship with no future...

Jodocca returns to her tribal land and is shocked to discover advancing Romans led by him. He is equally astounded when they manage a brief meeting.

Travelling north, Jodocca comes across a murderous scene that can only have been perpetrated by a Roman. She forces a meeting with Marcus Gaius at which she brands him with her geasa.
