Fleeing pain and misery, Rissa Young quits her job as a journalist, leaves her Philadelphia apartment behind, and goes backpacking in Europe. Her streak of bad luck follows her to France when she falls victim to a con game. Destitute and alone, Rissa is befriended by Frankie, a young girl who convinces her to stay with her family in the charming coastal town of Perpignan.

Wealthy boat-builder Evan Maynard allows her to stay...but only grudgingly. He's convinced that the woman his sister has brought into their luxurious home is just another of the hangers-on and opportunists Frankie always attracts.

Once he realizes that Rissa is neither, he concocts a plan to help his sister through the rebellious phase she's been stuck in since their parents' tragic disappearance. The plan seems to work—until Frankie's impulsive nature triggers a frantic search all the way to Barcelona, where Rissa and Evan must risk everything that matters to save her.
