When the crops in Shroud's Creek, Tennessee are being ruined by an unknown saboteur, young Gunnar Shuck discovers that a mythical creature is the elusive arsonist. No one believes him until it's too late, and the family farm is destroyed, forcing them to move North to Pennsylvania. There, Gunnar finds Mortenson's Curiosities, and its unusual owner who advertises that apart from selling oddities, he also captures paranormal creatures. Gunnar realizes that this man may be the only key he has to unlocking the answers. But this mysterious merchant is hiding secrets of his own, which threaten both of their lives.
