A meteor crashes into the middle of the Atlantic and the Others rise. Others are vampires, werecreatures like werewolves, werecats etc, therianthropes. This happens early on, like in the 1920s. Alexis McFlintlock is a novitiate of Benedictine nuns. Her father is on a crusade somewhere and she is on loan to the church, like the middle ages times did to women that were not married.
