The number of Australian artists who came to France around 1900 is surprising with close to thirty alone in Etaples. Some were but tourists and only passed; some, such as Arthur Baker Clack, Rupert Bunny, Isobel Rae, Hilda Rix and Marie Tuck, lingered and their stay in Etaples marked an important moment in their careers; others became "war artists", painters commissioned by the Australian Government, to present testimonies of the cataclysm of the Great War... Jean-Claude Lesage's unique exploration of the Australian artist colony in Etaples, on the French coast, was published in French in 2000, and appears now translated by Pauline Le Borgne with over 90 illustrations.
