Ava knew that vampires being real was ridiculous... But she didn't have another explanation...

When my best friend started acting weird and then disappeared, I knew that 'was turned into a vampire' was a ridiculous answer. But when my friend stopped eating and her eyes changed colour, and she started to avoid the sun like she was allergic... Well, I was struggling to come up with another explanation.
And then I ended up in the middle of a vampire attack and, well, it turns out that vampires can't make you forget something you already knew about, and I wasn't smart enough to play dumb.

The vampire who tried to erase my memory seems decent, and he says that he's willing to protect me, but I have to move into his coven, and their leader seems too interested in me for my own good.
And then there's my best friend, apparently still here, and potentially at risk for letting me figure out the truth.
Protecting both of us from the perils of vampire politics might take more social skill than I've got, but I don't exactly have a choice...
