Protectionism uses tariffs or other weapons to suppress foreign competition. Existing theories suggest that these measures can achieve efficient allocation, optimal welfare, and net gain. After unifying and refuting different theories, this book shows that taxing a single foreign product also taxes many domestic products, and that subsidizing a single domestic product also subsidizes many foreign products. On balance, a return to free trade, from tariff or subsidy, must be very profitable.
