Black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) is a main species of edible insects, which has been found to be well suited to scalable commercial scale production and efficiency to provide sustainable protein for livestock. This chapter will focus on the current knowledge of feeding BSF as an alternative protein source to conventional proteins such as soya bean meal (SBM) or fishmeal (FM) in the diets of pigs. We will discuss the benefits and the challenges of using BSF in pig diets and review what data is still lacking for widespread use of this novel protein.
