Benjin's father, Robert, has never had the family's best interests at heart, and now he's made a deal that only one of his children can fulfill. While trying to steal an ancient artifact from the Varkonian lord who rules over their province, Robert injured himself. Lord Cassian nursed him back to health and agreed not to have him thrown in prison on one condition—one of Robert's children has to marry Cassian. But Cassian is no ordinary man, as the magic-wielding men and women of Varko are only partly human, descended from a race of wolven gods. Benjin is furious with his father when he's told he has to escort his three sisters up to the castle so the beastly man can choose a bride. He's determined to do whatever he can to shield his sisters from a fate all of them dread, hoping to buy time to negotiate a completely different deal with the Varkonian.
