The promise seemed specious.

Ogan was quite comfortable with her life in stone-village. There was meat and green-stuff aplenty. There was labor and leisure. There was a prospective mate just starting to court her. All the challenges that her four hands could handle. So why look for something that she had never known, the fulfillment of a promise that might have been but a dream?

Then one light-turning, everything changed. With it came problems she could never have foreseen, benefits she would never have known, and duties that would have been beyond comprehension, had something wondrous not emerged from the birth-sea.

And all on her watch.
