Augustus Purce knows that nothing is ever what it seems. He's a pretty fair of example of that old saw, but now he has to take the village constable into his confidence. They have a rather nasty crime to unravel, and though it means Augustus will be dodging in and out of character, he's happy for the mental stimulation.
Meanwhile, the rest of the villagers have their own secrets to tend to.
