The crocodiles who live and hunt in the Nile river are ancient predators. They have many unique adaptations that help them thrive in the dark, muddy waters of their watery home. Special eyelids help them see in the murky waters and they can hold their breath for hours while they lie in wait. As ambush predators, crocodiles try not to waste energy chasing their prey and wait for their food to come to them. Mama crocodiles tend their nests and protect their vulnerable young. Baby crocodiles can already hunt and swim as soon as they're born, but mama will continue to watch over them until they're big enough to protect themselves. Because of their expert hunting skills, crocodiles are an important part of Ethiopia's riparian ecosystems.
