Today is Shadow Rabbit's half birthday. This is important to Shadow, but his mom has forgotten. When Shadow finds a pet rock, he is allowed to keep it as his present. Shadow walks his pet rock home and learns two things. It is not a rock, it is a very small rhino named Roger and, he is not a pet, he is a friend.
When Shadow brings Roger home, the Rabbit family is scared of him at first. Despite their fear and differences, they show compassion for someone in need and soon make Roger part of the family.
