My Broken Heart is a collection of poems about the author's love for a certain widow who had promised herself never to marry again. After several years of repeated friendliness and withdrawal on her part, she broke her promise and married another man. The poems tell of his love and persistent pleadings with her. They also demonstrate his emotional state at the time that the poems are written. Most of these poems were given to her to read as soon as they were written.
