《面子问题》剧中主要人物佟景铭秘书所苦恼的是"不能因为抗战失了身份"、"不能因为一件公事而把自己恼死"。他不务正业，对工作敷衍了事。当他闹了一辈子"面子问题"终于丢尽面子被免职以后，他所考虑的是向医生讨要一个"体面"的自杀办法，保住他的"面子"。剧中其他人物的"面子问题"又各不相同。老舍对这些人物的讽刺，不仅是对国民劣根性的又一次批判，也是对抗战时期国民党官僚机构的腐败作风的鞭挞。
