While hardly a household name in the English-speaking world, Bjørnson was-and remains-an immensely important literary figure in the Nordic world, a rival in popularity to his Norwegian compatriot Hendrik Ibsen. Grillparzer, likewise, though little known outside Europe, was widely admired in his native Austria.
