The parents of Stephenie Meyer, who as an adult wrote "Twilight" after having a vivid dream about a girl and a male vampire talking in a meadow, wanted their children to be readers. When Stephenie was seven years old, in 1980, her father read to the children before they went to bed Terry Brooks' "The Sword of Shannara." He would reach an exciting place and then stop reading for the night. Each day, Stephenie would sneak the book out of her parents' closet and read ahead to find out what had happened. The following year, her father began to read a chapter each night from "Gone with the Wind". Once again, Stephenie would get the book out and read ahead. Of course, the "Twilight" Saga was a major success. Ms. Meyer was once asked whether her husband was jealous of Edward Cullen, the vampire. She replied, "No, he refuses to be jealous of fictional characters. He says, 'I'm real, so I've got one on him there.'" Ms. Meyer got a $750,000 advance for a book contract to publish "Twilight" and two more novels. She was happy. She said, "I'd been hoping for $10,000 to pay off my minivan."
