"Bailén" is the fourth of Benito Pérez Galdós' National Episodes, centered on the prolegomena and the battle of Bailén, on July 19, 1808, in which the Spanish troops under the command of General Castaños inflicted their first defeat on Napoleon's French army, commanded on this occasion by General Dupont, at the early days of the Peninsular War.

And while historical events envelop the plot of Gabriel de Araceli, we accompany him from Madrid to Córdoba and Bailén, in search of his beloved Inés.

With the pleasant and light-hearted tone of previous installments, even with humor, Galdós continues the narrative, making his protagonist evolve as he introduces new characters and ideas, masterfully slipping in how the world is changing, also in the heads and hearts of many Spaniards, without them realizing it.
