The Three Lives of Kamala is a cultural gateway into the classical world of Medieval India. Inside this gateway, the high god, Lord Shiva, worries about the growing danger of a general war. The war clouds stem from the fears of the emperor Chandra Gupta, who is certain his missing diamond has been stolen by his rival Haider Ali. At the same time, the attractive widow Kamala is determined to gain salvation or moksha. Lord Shiva devises a plan for Kamala to achieve moksha and India to avoid a war. The key for the success of both journeys lies with Kamala's son, Raju. The temple priest, Bikshu, is the mediator for Lord Shiva as both stories unfold. Bikshu reveals "Shiva's instruction" to Raju that he must follow for both stories to end happily. It is a heavy responsibility as Raju faces several temptations.
