Harrel, a King's Ranger, duty-bound to help those in need, rescues two women from the notorious Red Lord; Marrigin: young, beautiful, and dainty, and her companion, Vallezza: a bit older, wiser, and touched by magic. Harrel is smitten with Marrigin, but during the treacherous flight from the Red Lord's guards, circumstances keep her and Harrel apart, but Vallezza is always at his side. In dreams, she takes him to Elsewhere, a modern world where they meet Michael, a young man tormented by bullies because, like the Hafling, he is different.
