It is the year 43 CE, and Camp Prefect Gaius Pullus, his son Centurion Titus Volusenianus Pullus, and Gnaeus' half-brother Centurion Titus Corbulianus Pullus are participating in Emperor Claudius' invasion of the island of Britannia. So much unbearable loss and betrayal has transpired over the previous twenty years for the Pullus family, but this is not just a matter of duty for Gnaeus. Somewhere on this island are his estranged Parisii wife and their son Marcus. A decade earlier, Bronwen disappeared with Marcus in the aftermath of an unspeakable tragedy that almost destroyed the Pullus family. What haunts Gnaeus is not knowing which part of his youngest son's heritage is calling to him—his Roman side, or his Parisii side—and all three Pullus men under the standard fear the idea that the youngest member of the family may be fighting for the Catuvellauni chieftain Caratacus.
