At the peak of Britain's first generation tramways, it was possible to travel by tram all the way from Pier Head at Liverpool to the Pennines in Rochdale. Amongst the chain of tramways that formed these links were the services that operated in Bolton, St Helens, Wigan and the company lines controlled by South Lancashire Tramways.

Yn anterth cenhedlaeth gyntaf y tramiau, roedd yn bosibl teithio ar y tram yr holl ffordd o ben pella'r Pier yn Lerpwl i Rochdale yn ardal y Pennines. Ymhlith y gadwyn o dramiau oedd yn creu'r cysylltiadau hyn roedd gwasanaethau a weithredai yn Bolton, St Helens a Wigan, a'r llinellau diwydiannol a reolid gan y South Lancashire Tramways.
