本書研究着眼於袁世凱、徐世昌、段祺瑞、曹錕四位北洋元首的詩文。他們有着長期投身軍旅的經歷,對傳統「詩教」也非常重視。 袁世凱最可靠的詩作皆成於清末隱居洹上之時,既流露出對政局的憂心、懷才不遇的憤懣,也表達了流連山水之情。徐世昌出身翰林,清末民初久經官場,閱歷豐富,詩作達六千餘首,但表達的每多山水隱逸的自適之思。段祺瑞的詩歌多作於直皖戰爭以後,有意識地用以感世,內容風格質樸而少雅趣。曹錕自北京政變下野之後,寄情於禪悅、書畫和詩文。其詩作以題畫詠梅為主,不無自辯乃至自悔的動機。 北洋元首詩作中感世與自適宗旨的並存、扞格與消長,固然與民初政體對元首職能之設定與規範關係甚大,卻也視乎各人自身個性與經歷。無論哪一層宗旨,都是北洋元首藉以塑造自我形象的重要手段,他們並試圖透過「詩教」來影響輿論時局、世道人心,乃至建構一己之思想體系。
