When Freydís, a fourteen-year-old Icelandic girl, has a close encounter with a Nixie, a mythical creature. It sets in motion a chain of events that will test the limits of her and her brother Viktor's elemental powers. Freydís is the wielder of earth's elemental powers, and Viktor can control fire. They soon discover that their elemental powers are intertwined with a dangerous threat that threatens to engulf Asgard and Midgard in everlasting darkness.

To stand against the evil forces, the siblings must uncover the dormant Land Wights, ancient spirits of the land of Iceland, and awaken them from their slumber. Strengthening their connection to the elemental forces, Freydís and Viktor must seek the other elementalists, those who harness the powers of water and air. Together, they must overcome their weaknesses, solve riddles, and forge alliances with mythical beings.
