Glenn See wants to marry Monalisa Coolidge, but her parents think Bud Jackson is a better suitor for their daughter. After all, his ranch is well established, while Glenn is still working on building up his outfit. And now, three head of Glenn's cattle are missing, and he's nursing a headache from an unexpected encounter with one of Jackson's hands. He can only imagine what Lisa's ma will have to say about his missing livestock.

Lisa struggles against her parents' preference for the older rancher. She thinks he is fat and ugly, and can't imagine herself being kissed by or married to the man. She wants to marry Glenn See. He's closer to her age and that makes sense to her. Besides, she wants to have a baby, and Ma says Mr. Jackson probably doesn't want more children. But Lisa doesn't want Mr. Jackson's baby. She can only dream of making Glenn's little ranch house a home for the two of them, and when a baby comes along, it can sleep in a dresser drawer.

A story about treachery and bravery in the Old West near the fictional town of Haught Springs, Texas.
