This book examines the linguistic diversity in contemporary spoken Irish and the values that are linked to that diversity. This book addresses the issue of attention to the linguistic diversity of the Irish language. It explores public awareness of this diversity to highlight the social significance that the community associates with it. The first chapter is theoretical, presenting a theoretical model of the work as an introduction for the reader. This chapter focuses on social theory regarding the structure of society, the role of institutional structures, and the role of individual agency within the social system. It emphasizes recent modernity theory and the interaction between society and the individual. Within this theoretical framework, the attention to linguistic diversity, as well as its connection to language shift and diversity, is discussed.
