Forced to lie about his job as a linguist while translating an obscure artifact for Area 51, Gordon Huntington finds himself losing everything that is important to him including his wife and children. After his wife leaves him and his children begin to realize that what their father tells them about his work does not match up with what they have discovered, they go searching for him. Along the way, they uncover some startling revelations about their father, their mother, the mysterious artifact he is working on, and some rather unsettling revelations that they themselves may be the product of Area 51 research. The approximate 15K word short story is a rapid-paced adventure that introduces characters that are a part of a greater work on the part of the author and though it functions entirely as a stand-alone read, it adds depth and backstory to those greater works. While the author touches on many standard (and often over-worked) science fiction and fantasy themes, he introduces his own twist on these classics with his unique take on themes such as cloning, AI, Area 51, mutants, and even the mysterious city of Atlantis. If you're looking for a fresh take on some worn tropes, this and other stories by KM Paradice will not disappoint.
