Emperor Justinian has ordered a halt to Belisarius's campaign against the Scots of Dalriada on the west coast of Caledonia, the homeland of the Caledonii, their new allies, although most Romans still refer to them as the Picts. Instead, the Romans must help the Caledonii defend the east coast against an invasion by Germania and Scandia. But when and where will their longships land? Belisarius's army, including the airships of the 4th Airborne Legion, must spread out along the threatened shores. One century of airships is commanded by Cillian. His Gothic-Scot parentage causes some Romans to suspect his loyalty while Empress Theodora and Druidess Coevla believe his mixed lineage will serve their causes. But Cillian wants to seek his own destiny, not support theirs. He is determined not to let these problems distract him from his duties nor from the coming battles of this summer. The empress, the druidess, and the Fates, however, have other ideas.
