Why a book of Haiku? It's discipline, challenging, and fun. Sometimes, you get an idea or a thought and write it down. It could become a poem or just a thought. You put it into a short form, and it becomes an educational, psychological game. The haiku becomes something like speed-‐reading, picking up an idea or thought with only a few words or little word puzzles, making you think for a moment. Misfortune Cookies wants you to visualize outside that proverbial box and tickle your imagination, bringing a serendipitous smile. If I can touch your emotions briefly, we have connected in this universe.

In Misfortune Cookiea, I sometimes give you a peek at my thoughts with a brief note or explanation at the bottom of the page. Some footnotes appear at the end of the book, revealing the humanity behind the final four poems. However, most of the haiku are left for your interpretation and imagination.

Haiku is a worthy subject if you wish and have the time to research it. I have used two primary forms. First, the traditional 5-‐7-‐5-‐syllabic placement is not strictly held to Japanese subject matter. Secondly, I employ a non-‐traditional 3-‐5-‐3-‐syllable count, a hybrid of the Lune.

I do not claim to be a structurally sound poet, but I try. However, I think you may find my thoughts and points of view worthy of discussion. There is something for every thinker. Agree or disagree-‐ I thank you for your time.

Enjoy your Misfortune Cookies.
