This book examines the ISIS narrative in order to show how ISIS appropriates the past, interprets the present, and envisions the future for Arab Muslims. This project relies on rhetorical analysis by taking all the speeches written and delivered by Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the media spokesman for ISIS from 2011 to 2016, as a case study. It aims to highlight the similarities - if any - between the view of some and the view of ISIS in terms of the public's interpretations of this extremist ideology in relation to the "other", Sharia, caliphate, and jihad. The analysis also highlights the need to develop a participatory communication space for dialogue between people and between people and other actors, whether the state, international organizations or civil society.
