Agricultural value chains in the African context play a pivotal role in the attainment of increased food security, sustainable development, and economic growth when properly integrated into the broader global value chains. Nevertheless, African value chains confront substantial challenges, including challenging operating environments, financing limitations, deficient infrastructure and regulatory barriers, which collectively impede progress across the continent. This chapter reviews these challenges and ways they can be addressed. It also includes a series of case studies on successful solutions that have been implemented in practice. It argues that a strategic approach is needed to bolster participation in global value chains and add value to the agricultural sector, resulting in increased food security and economic progress within the region.
