With a focus on the USA, this chapter traces the development of the country's agri-food supply chain, which has experienced significant consolidation across all echelons. Types of agri-food supply chains are discussed, highlighting local agri-food supply chains which have become more prevalent recently in the USA. National supply chains, however, still play the major role, and are expected to do so in the future. The chapter also looks at the international trade flows of U.S. agri-food supply chains, with more detail provided for the USA's neighbouring countries (Mexico and Canada). A major part of the chapter is further devoted to key challenges facing the U.S. agri-food supply chain, which include the repercussions of the COVID19 pandemic, food safety, food losses and waste, labour shortages, droughts, and financial pressures. This is followed by a section highlighting recent developments, including technological innovations and sustainable agriculture.
