This story takes place in the fictional town of New Hope, North Carolina. It's situated in the southwest corner, roughly 50 miles from Charlotte. Its people are the kind we all want to know and in a perfect world, live among. Melissa Murphy is a young wife and mother, trying to hold her family together. She and Bobby, her husband, have moved a lot since their marriage five years ago. They have two small children. Bobby is a functioning alcoholic and drug user and he beats Melissa regularly.
