The book attempts to shed light on the true meaning of the Sabbath, which God intended from the very act of man's creation ("the Sabbath as 'remembrance'"). In the book the Sabbath is seen as primarily "a state" before being "a day", demonstrating that the true Sabbath is obtained only through Christ's forgiveness ("present" Sabbath) and will be fully enjoyed by man only at the resurrection of the body in Christ's Kingdom ("hope" Sabbath). The Sabbath, like circumcision in the flesh (the other "sign" of the Mosaic covenant), has fulfilled its didactic purpose, both "signs" being transferred to the heart of the born-again man.
