At a peak in 1883 there were 16 hotels in the Herberton district. Only two remain today, the Australian built in 1881 and the Royal built in 1880. These two establishments are the longest continually licenced premises on the Atherton Tablelands. This is a brief history of the individuals and families who ran these hotels and a photo timeline of the hotels.
