The play begins with Diego, the main advisor, announcing, through a letter he received, that an unknown white man would come to the village. Of course, he has convinced the corrupt priest, Alexander, to prophesy that they should welcome this visitor.

In a community that does not have accepted visitors since the war, this is difficult news to accept. For them, visitors mean illness, disease; and fighting.
