I'm hopes and sorrows, were who the skeleton was and how it got there. When Moshe integrated his theater, Chona Ludlow operated the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, and the two of them resided in Chicken Hill. Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe's theater and the unofficial head of the Black community on Chicken Hill, collaborated to keep the youngster safe when the authorities came seeking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him.

As the tales of these individuals intersect and develop, it becomes evident how difficult it is for those who live on the periphery of white, Christian America to exist and what measures they must take. When the truth of what really transpired on Chicken Hill and the role the town's white elite played in it is eventually made public, McBride demonstrates to us that love and community—heaven and earth—are what keep us going during difficult times.

James McBride has written a novel as innovative and sympathetic as The Good Lord Bird, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, bringing his master narrative abilities and abiding faith in people to the book.
