Mary Sprague of Littleton, Massachusetts, married Nahum Whitcomb shortly before hostilities broke out between the states. The newly-wed Nahum didn't join when the first call for volunteers went out, but he didn't resist for long and enlisted for nine months. Sadly, he didn't make it home alive, and Mary found herself responsible for the mortgaged farm and an infant at a time when employment for women was extremely limited.
